About the opportunity

The School of Physics at the University of Sydney is currently seeking applications for a Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Theoretical Optics and Photonics to establish a research program in a relevant area of optics and photonics, with a strong theoretical component. The successful candidate will build collaborations with the Institute of Photonics and Optical Science’s (IPOS) vibrant optics and photonics community.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • contribute to outstanding teaching and learning in Physics

  • demonstrate research excellence, develop a program of original research either independently or as part of a team, and pursue external funding to support this research

  • develop and maintain collaborations within the School of Physics and IPOS, in particular working with experimentalists

  • participate in research student supervision at the undergraduate and postgraduate level

  • develop external research partnerships and engagement

  • contribute to engagement and service/administrative activities of the School of Physics and Faculty of Science

  • contribute to and help shape the strategic goals of School and Faculty and of IPOS.

If your research aligns with the newly funded ARC Centre of Excellence in Optical Microcombs for Breakthrough Science (COMBS), an exciting opportunity awaits you at this role. You could step into a senior leadership role within the University of Sydney COMBS CoE Node, gaining access to substantial research funding in groundbreaking fields such as nonlinear optics, advanced spectroscopy and microscopy, cutting-edge information and intelligence technologies, innovative sensing and measurement techniques, and pioneering astronomical applications of frequency combs.

About you

The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity. As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Theoretical Optics and Photonics who has:

  • a PhD or other research doctorate in a relevant field

  • a strong track record of research including theoretical optics and photonics

  • the skill to clearly express ideas and communicate within a team environment

  • the ability to work independently on problems, and motivate junior members of the team

  • demonstrated ability and enthusiasm to work with experimentalists

  • a capability to see the bigger picture, and have vision for the future development of your projects

  • experience in university-level teaching, including lecturing or similar presentations

  • sufficient proficiency in physics theory to teach, with appropriate preparation time, into any undergraduate physics classes (including for example quantum, statistical, solid-state physics and electromagnetism)

  • demonstrated progress toward your own independent research program evidenced by original, high-quality, research, as evidenced by refereed publications in particular; a track record of external funding success is an advantage, especially at Level C. In accord with the international Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), journal impact factors will not be considered and should not be mentioned in your application

  • evidence of developing capacity to contribute to governance, administration, and leadership in the higher education sector.
