ABOUT THE REPORT

This report covers revenue generated from the direct manufacture of photonic and quantum technologies components, goods and services in Australia and New Zealand. The financial data was updated in November 2023 based on the last full fiscal year reported by then (i.e. ending late 2022 to early 2023). Revenues from end-market systems or services are not included. A substantial number of new companies (810) have been identified and added since the analysis undertaken in 2019 and these account for most of the growth. This is typical in markets where sector surveys are relatively new. Most of the companies are small start-ups.

The financial data is based on Australian and New Zealand photonics output (revenues), employment and salaries. An updated methodology was used for apportioning profits where data was missing.

Data analysis was undertaken by Dr. John Lincoln of Harlin Ltd, with the support of SPIE. This report is representative of the industry, but not an exhaustive account. The data has been supplemented with qualitative information from interviewees in both countries. These contributors are listed at the end of this report.
